Our feet are often taken for granted - until they start to hurt. From walking and standing to exercising and working, we rely on them every day. But when foot problems arise, ignoring them can lead to bigger, more serious issues.

Here are 7 warning signs that you should never ignore. If you experience any of these, it’s time to see a podiatrist:

1. Sudden or Severe Foot Pain

If you experience sharp, sudden, or worsening pain in your foot or ankle, it could be a sign of a fracture, tendon rupture, or joint issue. Don’t try to push through it - delaying treatment may lead to permanent damage or chronic pain.

2. Persistent Swelling

Swelling that lasts more than a few days or gets worse over time can signal problems like infection, poor circulation, or even a blood clot. If elevation and rest don’t reduce it, get checked out.

3. Numbness, Tingling, or Burning

These are common signs of nerve involvement, especially in people with diabetes. They could point to peripheral neuropathy or nerve compression. Early treatment can slow progression and prevent complications.

4. Wounds That Won’t Heal

A sore on your foot that doesn’t improve within a few days is a red flag, especially for people with diabetes. It could turn into a diabetic ulcer, which can become infected and lead to serious outcomes - even amputation.

5. Skin Discoloration or Red Streaks

Skin that turns red, purple, or blue - especially if accompanied by warmth or pain - may indicate infection or circulatory issues. Red streaks moving up the foot or leg could mean an infection is spreading, which is a medical emergency.

6. Changes in Foot Shape

If you notice your foot arch collapsing, toes drifting out of alignment, or unusual bumps or deformities, these changes could be due to arthritis, injury, or nerve problems. Early podiatric care can prevent the condition from worsening.

7. Infected Ingrown Toenail

An ingrown nail may seem minor, but if it becomes swollen, red, or pus-filled, it can quickly lead to a serious infection. This is especially risky for people with diabetes or poor circulation.
